Your inner critic can be fueled by a number of sources, both internal and external. Such negativity doesn’t need much of a spark in order to rage out of control. Comparison to others is one trigger that can cause insecurity and negativity to spiral. Perhaps such comparisons are a problem for you, too. Looking outside yourself can be a source of motivation if it’s done in a healthy way. Unfortunately, too many of us compare ourselves unfairly to others, causing unnecessary pain.

Your inner critic gains a great deal of its strength specifically because of the fact that it's internal. These are the messages you’re giving yourself, and sometimes your view can be skewed. It's hard to see the best in ourselves, especially when our negative self-talk doesn't ever seem to let up.

Social media can be awesome. Catching up with friends and family, seeing photos of their vacations, and reading about their milestones in life can be fun and exciting. Unfortunately, it can also come with some negative effects, including lowering your self-confidence. It’s so easy to unfairly compare yourself to others and let your inner critic run wild when you spend lots of time looking at the lives of others. Being bombarded by the highlights of your friends’ seemingly perfect lives can even lead to sadness and anxiety. As with most aspects of dealing with your inner critic, it’s important to know that you can take control of your social media in order to get the results you want from the experience.

Most of us tend not to celebrate ourselves enough. Our inner critic thrives because it’s much easier to recognize flaws than it is to embrace our strengths. That seems to be something most people can relate to. As with the other strategies we’ve discussed along the way, you can break out of this habit of noticing only your shortcomings. It just takes a shift in mindset and some practice. The results are well worth the effort.

Sometimes there’s more than our own perceptions influencing that voice inside our heads. We have a lifetime of experiences that have contributed to who we are. It only makes sense that our interactions with the people in our lives would have an influence on the messages we give ourselves. This is likely true of you. If you think about it, can you name one or more people who have sent you negative messages over the course of your life? We internalize these words and make them a part of our being. Overcoming the negative influence of past experiences takes a lot of work.

Getting in the habit of addressing your inner critic can be really tough. As they say, old habits die hard. That’s because we become so used to doing things a certain way that it usually doesn’t occur to us to do them any differently. By the time we decide a change is needed, it takes serious effort to break long-held, ingrained habits. This is true of your inner critic. You’ve gotten used to hearing and believing its messages. Ignoring or refuting those words will take time. But, as with most habits, it does get easier with practice.

I’ve mentioned the concept of momentum many times throughout this challenge. That’s because it’s such a key component to changing your self-talk. In fact, it’s essential to changing any habit and achieving goals. Momentum, in this case, is the combined forward actions that build upon each other. As that force continues to move, it gets stronger. That’s why, once you start something new and practice it regularly, it becomes easier.
